INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MUSEUMS IN THE REPUBLIC OF KARAKALPAKSTAN: FROM CULTURAL EXCHANGE TO SUSTAINABLE MUSEUM PRACTICES

International cooperation has become a key mechanism transforming museums from heritage repositories into centers of research, education, cultural diplomacy, and sustainable development. While global scholarship focuses on major Western and Asian museums, the experience of regional museums in Central Asia, particularly in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, remains understudied.
This article examines the role of international partnerships in the post-independence development (1991–present) of museums in Karakalpakstan. Using a qualitative case-study approach based on historical-comparative, documentary, and institutional analysis, the study draws on official documents, museum reports, and scholarly publications.
Findings show that international cooperation evolved from episodic cultural exchanges into a strategic tool for institutional modernization, enhancing research capacity, collection preservation, exhibition practices, digital transformation, and cultural diplomacy. The article argues that such partnerships are essential for the long-term sustainability and global integration of regional museums.
